2023-2024 Welcome & Elections

Hello Summerside Families!

Welcome to the 2023/2024 Summerside Swarm school year!

We were pleased to welcome students and families back to school!

A huge part of our school success is thanks to our parents and community support.  Our School Council welcomes you back and would like to take this time to encourage you to attend our Monthly School Council meetings.  They are typically held on the third Wednesday of every month from 7pm - 8:30pm.

As we begin this school year, we will be holding our first council meeting virtually on
September 27th, 2023 from 7pm-8:30pm.  We encourage you to attend this meeting and participate on our council – either as an elected member or a member at large.

ELECTION OF THE COUNCIL EXECUTIVE

During our first meeting we will also be holding our Council Elections, whereby there are up to four (4) executive positions available (see below).  There is also an opportunity to take on various non-executive roles or participate as a Member at Large.

We have been working hard on Council since the 2017 inception of the school in trying to raise funds for our short- and long-term goals!

WHO SITS ON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COUNCIL?

  • Executive Officers (Chair/Co-chairs, Treasurer and Secretary)
  • Members at Large
  • School Principal
  • Teacher Representative (one)
  • Community Representative (up to two, as and when required)
  • Non-Teaching Employee Representative (one)
  • Student Representative

WHO CAN BE ELECTED TO YOUR SCHOOL COUNCIL?

Any parent/guardian of a student enrolled at Summerside can be elected as a parent member of the school council.*

The term of office for all elected school council members is one year. The elected school council member holds office from the date that he/she is elected until the date of the next school council elections. A school council member may be re-elected as per the terms established in the school council constitution.

Any parent/guardian of a student enrolled in your school can vote to elect the parent members of the school council.

*Employees of the school district can be elected to a school council provided their employment status is disclosed.  However, an employee cannot be the Chair or Co-chair of the Council.

WHAT ARE THE POSITIONS THAT WILL BE VOTED ON FOR SCHOOL COUNCIL?

Voting will take place on September 21st, 2022 for the following executive officer positions:

  • Chair or two Co-Chairs
  • Treasurer
  • Secretary

Details on duties of each Summerside council member can be found at this link. In addition, we are also looking for individuals to take on non-executive roles, which include:

  • communications/social media lead
  • fundraising lead
  • community member
  • student representative(s) - Grade 7 & 8

Parents also have the option to participate on school council in a non-executive role as a “Member at Large”. In this role, you can determine your involvement based on availability and participate in fundraising initiatives, social media communications or leading a sub-committee. Whether you can volunteer for an hour to help with preparations, or for an entire event, Summerside Council can use your help!
