At Summerside, we offer the following programs:
- French exposure for students in Kindergarten, Year One/Maternelle and Year Two/Jardin d’enfants (instruction with both French and English speaking teachers and Early Childhood Educators) leading to Early French Immersion starting in grade one
- Early French Immersion, for students in grades 1 - 8 (grade one entry point)
- English Regular program with Core French for grade 7 and 8 students (with Avalon P. S. as our Grade 1 - 6 feeder school)
- Specialized Program Contained Classes for students placed through IPRC
Our school also offers an Extended Day Program (EDP). The district's EDP provides before and after school care for our students and busy parents. It is staffed with Summerside’s Early Childhood Educator Team, who, during regular hours of the school day, also work in our Kindergarten classes.
Inside the building we have 30 classrooms, an enormous gym equipped with a beautiful stage (including newly purchased stage curtains and, soon, stage lighting) and modern electronic scoreboard. We have a large music room, 2 science labs, a makerspace/art room, a servery for cooking and a wide open library-learning commons. Throughout the school we also have a number of “hubs” where students can gather outside of the classroom to collaborate in small groups, using technology to learn, create and collaborate.
As some students benefit from gross motor movement and sensory activities, we have a very well-equipped body break room to support student self-regulation and physical well-being.
Outdoors, we have an enclosed Kinder yard with a play structure, a basketball court, two funnel ball stations and a huge field for outdoor play. Our school council is working to enhance our very large yard with more trees and enhanced outdoor learning and play areas. We have lots of space for outdoor sports such as soccer, baseball, cricket, football and basketball.
Summerside offers many extracurricular activities for its students. Students can choose from a vast number of clubs, including various sports, music (such as ukuleles, band & choir), visual arts and maker space, robotics, design, cooking and drama. Our talented staff is keen to include all students with different interests and abilities, both inside the classroom and out. Students are also encouraged to appreciate the various cultural events and celebrations found in our community.
Summerside is a school where students can make close friends, expand their horizons in the arts and sports, learn leadership skills, and thrive academically. We focus on building relationships between students and staff, as well as between students and their peers. We know when students feel safe physically and emotionally, they learn better, and develop academically and socially to the best of their abilities. We work hard to recognize the uniqueness of each student and look for their strengths and talents.
Summerside also has a very active School Council, a group of parents who meet monthly with the principal, vice-principal and teacher representative to discuss school operations, fundraising and community partnerships. Our Summerside School Council is always looking for parents and guardians who would like to be more involved in school governance, social and community building activities and fundraising initiatives.
